MADRID — Time magazine has named Pedro Almodovar one of its European heroes who have changed the world for the better.
The director was one of 37 people who were given the accolade by the US magazine.
Almodovar was hailed as someone who had "helped the fight for equal rights by putting gay life on the big screen".
The 56-year-old has made a series of films which examine gay life, Church repression and sexual diversity.
After Spain's government passed a law this summer legalising same-sex marriage, Almodovar said: "It is a historic day, but it is only the politics at last catching up with society.
"My films haven't changed society, merely supported the progress it was making."
But he is wary of being typecast because of his sexuality.
"No one talks about the heterosexual president of the United States, so why should they call me a gay director?" he told the Spanish daily El Mundo.
