GRAN CANARIA —An air-sea search was underway on Tuesday after a sailor was lost at sea off the Canary Islands.

Corporal Miguel Ángel López Cerrillo, 30, was lost near Gran Canaria, when his training ship the Juan Sebastián de Elcano was on manoeuvres.

The Spanish Navy said Cerillo was last seen at 3am and failed to report for duty at 4am.

Naval sources said he is thought to have fallen in the water but an investigation has been launched into the circumstances.

The ship was about to dock at Gran Canaria when the incident happened.

Helicopters, a fighter jet and two patrol ships were involved in the search for Cerillo, who is from Jaen in southern Spain and who has spent eight years in the navy.

His ship had been due to travel to Brazil when the accident happened.
