HUELVA — The Spanish Guardia Civil have arrested five members of a non-governmental organisation Huelva Solidaria for allegedly defrauding 40,000 immigrants they were meant to be helping.

The police operation was launched following complaints from immigrants who were linked to the NGO.

They claimed members of the NGO allegedly charged them for doing paperwork which was free.

The immigrants did not realise they were being tricked until they had paid the cash in many cases.

Due the large number of people who were caught up in the alleged fraud, police selected those who were worst affected as witnesses.

It was not known how much cash had been swindled from immigrants in total.

Five people have so far been arrested, though Guardia Civil sources said more arrests might follow.

A local city council official was also arrested.

The Guardia Civil want to hear from any more victims. They should call 959 241 900.
