Acclaimed Spanish philosopher Aguilera dies

15 December 2005, MADRID — Spanish philosopher and essayist Julian Marias Aguilera, considered the main disciple of Jose Ortega y Gasset, has died after a long illness. He was 91.

MADRID — Spanish philosopher and essayist Julian Marias Aguilera, considered the main disciple of Jose Ortega y Gasset, has died after a long illness. He was 91.

A member of the Royal Academy of the Spanish Language since 1964, Marias was the author of some 60 books.

Some dealt with the thought and work of the late Ortega y Gasset, along with Miguel de Unamuno modern Spain's most renowned philosopher.

Marias had been awarded numerous academic prizes from several countries, and was a long-time collaborator of the Argentine daily La Nacion.

His works were translated into English, German, French, Portuguese, Dutch and Greek.
