MADRID — All Spain was in mourning on Wednesday after the national football team went out of the World Cup.
Spain were defeated 3-1 by France in a gripping game.
Front page headlines in Wednesday's Spanish papers captured the national mood of gloom.
The left-leaning daily El Pais said: 'France buries Spanish dreams in the World Cup'.
El Mundo put it more simply: 'National disappointment'.
Television news programmes showed the tear-stained faces of Spanish fans after the match at the World Cup in Germany or back home.
Spain has never won the World Cup, but a recent poll for the sports newspaper AS found more than half the population believed they could bring home the trophy this time.
