ALMERIA - Spanish police raided a number of bordellos in Almeria province in an operation which began overnight and arrested 50 people on prostitution charges, officials said Thursday.

Most of the bordellos, known in Spanish as clubes de alterne, were located in and around the town of El Ejido.

Authorities said the detainees were both Spaniards and foreigners and they were awaiting processing at the National Police headquarters in Almeria city.

The suspects face charges of prostitution and exploiting workers. No other details of the raids were immediately released.

The raids coincide with the introduction of a bill in the Spanish parliament which requires the government to investigate the finances of bordellos and boost the prosecution of individuals who make their living from prostitution.

Expected to be passed this summer, the bill also calls for authorities to come up with a plan to crack down on the trafficking of women employed at the clubs.
