Another 23 people are suspected to be involved in the child pornography network, say Spanish police.

MADRID – Spanish police said Monday they have arrested 34 people in an operation against Internet child pornography.

Those held are suspected of "the possession, distribution and purchase of images of child pornography on the Internet," a police statement said.

It said a further 23 people are suspected of involvement in the network.

Officers raided 41 premises in several provinces, seizing more than four million computer files.

Some of the arrests resulted from international cooperation, in particular with German and British police.

Spanish police have identified the fight against child pornography on the Internet as one of their priorities, and the unit in charge of such operations is one of the most internationally recognised.

Over the past five years, more than 1,200 people have been arrested in Spain for Internet child pornography.

Investigators have been helped by the use of a programme known as "Hispalis", which allows them to detect and provide names and addresses of Internet users as they are logging on to illegal websites.
