A joint operation by US and Spanish police has led to the arrest of 14 people suspected of distributing child pornography over the Internet, Spain's interior ministry said Friday.

A total of 150 agents from the US Federal Bureau of Investigation and Spain's Civil Guard police force took part in the operation which led to nine arrests in Spain and five in the US, it said in a statement.

The officers carried out a 34 search operations in the two countries as the result of a probe launched in Spain in March last year.

Two of those held in Spain possessed pornographic images of children from their own families while one man held in Washington DC is suspected of taking a pornographic photograph of his daughter.

The ministry said those held came from all social classes and a variety of professions.

Spain has stepped up its fight against online child pornography, arresting more than 1,200 people in the past five years, using sophisticated new software.
