MARBELLA — The former wife of one of the central figures in the Marbella civic corruption scandal was among 11 more arrests on Tuesday.
Maite Zaldivar, ex wife of former Marbella mayor Julian Muñoz, was detained at her home.
The Spanish televisión channel Telecinco reported she is to face charges of money laundering in connection with the scandal.
Zaldivar is said to have helped Muñoz to have hidden cash illegally taken from Marbella city council.
Ten other people have been arrested in connection with the same corruption ring.
Among them was the former owner of Seville FC, Jose Maria Gonzalez de Caldas. Others were a mixture of developers and one banking official.
Muñoz has been arrested and charged with bribery and embezzlement of public funds.
This is the latest arrest in the corruption scandal involving alleged collusion between property developers and councillors in Marbella.
So far over 30 people have been arrested since the police launched Operation Malaya in March.
Among them are the former mayor, head of urban planning and the head of the local police.
The central government dissolved the entire council.
Police sources said as much as EUR 3.5 billion in cash was said to be involved in the affair.
Zaldívar told one television programme how her former husband would return with bags full of money he had taken from the council – an accusation she later withdrew.
