Super Tuesday - the Overseas Voter 31/01/2008 00:00
As expatica tracks the events surrounding Super Tuesday, we are talking to and listening to overseas Americans in the six countries we cover.
They are calling it Super Tuesday and it has even been dubbed ‘Super Duper Tuesday‘. It’s the Super Bowl of American politics for 2008.
The superlatives have been flying because on Tuesday February 5th American voters will be called to the urns to potentially decide during one critical 24hr period who will lead their parties forward in the race for the keys to that big white house.
From coast to coast, from sea to shining sea, Americans will go behind the curtain and have their say. But what of the American population abroad? How do Americans in Europe express their democratic rights? With recent elections going down to the wire, how vital could Overseas Voters prove to be in the final analysis?
In the days leading up to the Big Bang, expatica will be talking to and listening to Americans abroad from Cadiz in the southern tip of Spain to the Bay of Kiel
in Germany northern. Applying its unique relationships with expatriate organisations and communities in all six expatica countries, our team will be asking them about the difficulties of voting abroad, the problems involved, such as the practicalities, the sense of distance from the action back home, dealing with American foreign policy as it affects those abroad directly in their adopted communities.
Here are the questions we have been asking expatriate Americans. Don't be daunted by the number of questions. Go straight for the issue that matters most to you. We will be able to feature some - but not all - of your views in upcoming features.
(General note: Though many of the answers may be a simple Yes or No, please feel free to expand your thoughts on each question.)
- Do you feel that it's important to vote?
- Do you feel that the new Democrats Abroad global primary is important to you and to the election in general?
- Are you a member of a political party?
- Do you participate in American civic life while abroad (e.g. cyberactivism, op-ed letters, overseas party activism, other)?
- Given the fierce competition for votes due to small victory margins in recent elections, do you feel that the candidates are paying more attention to the votes of overseas Americans?
- Are you more interested in the election than you would be if you were in the US or less interested?
- Do you think you would vote differently if you lived in the US and if so, why?
- Would you say that interest in this year's election is higher than usual abroad? If so, why?
- What is the most important issue to you in the upcoming election?
- Where do you get the most useful and persuasive information about the election (TV, newspapers, Internet...)?
- Are you spending a lot of time talking about this year's election with other expats?
- Does the attitude of people in the country in which you live influence the way you feel about the current US administration? In what way?
- What is the first thing the next President should do to improve the USA's image abroad?
- How do you think the gender or race of the next US president will affect the country's status abroad?
- What do you think of the role Bill Clinton is playing in Hillary Clinton's campaign?
- Are you planning on staying up to follow the Super Tuesday primaries?
- Which candidate, if elected president, would make you most proud to be an American and why?
- Which is more important to you in a president: ability to pass legislation or ability to inspire the country?
- Which aspect of the presidential campaign do you find hardest to explain to Europeans?

- Do you feel that it's important to vote? YES
- Do you feel that the new Democrats Abroad global primary is important to you and to the election in general? IT IS IMPORTANT TO ME TO KNOW HOW OTHER EXPATS VOTE. PROBABLY NOT IMPORTANT TO THE ELECTION.
- Are you a member of a political party? YES
- Do you participate in American civic life while abroad (e.g. cyberactivism, op-ed letters, overseas party activism, other)? YES
- Given the fierce competition for votes due to small victory margins in recent elections, do you feel that the candidates are paying more attention to the votes of overseas Americans? NO
- Are you more interested in the election than you would be if you were in the US or less interested?
AS INTERESTED. WHERE I AM PHYSICALLY IS NOT IMPORTANT.
- Do you think you would vote differently if you lived in the US and if so, why? NO
- Would you say that interest in this year's election is higher than usual abroad? If so, why?
YES. THE CURRENT US ADMINISTRATION IS WIDELY VIEWED AS A DISASTER BY THOSE OUTSIDE THE US. FOREIGNERS CRAVE A US GOVERNMENT THAT SHOWS MORE RESPECT AND COLLEGIALITY TO OTHER COUNTRIES; ALSO ONE THAT IS NOT SO EAGER TO GO TO WAR.
- What is the most important issue to you in the upcoming election? HEALTHCARE
- Where do you get the most useful and persuasive information about the election (TV, newspapers, Internet...)? VARIETY OF SOURCES (ECONOMIST MAG, NY TIMES ON WEB, POLITICALLY ENGAGED FRIENDS AND RELATIVES, OCCASIONALLY BBC OR CNN BUT I TRUST THESE LESS.
- Are you spending a lot of time talking about this year's election with other expats? YES
- Does the attitude of people in the country in which you live influence the way you feel about the current US administration? In what way? YES, BUT INDIRECTLY. MOST PEOPLE HERE SEEM TO WANT THE US TO CONTINUE TO LEAD AS THEY HAVE IN THE PAST, BUT TO DO SO MORE RESPONSIBLY.
- What is the first thing the next President should do to improve the USA's image abroad? VISIT AND ENGAGE OTHER COUNTRIES. IMPLEMENT US POLICIES WHICH RESPECT BASIC WORLD NORMS SUCH AS GENEVA CONVENTION.
- How do you think the gender or race of the next US president will affect the country's status abroad? I THINK THE GENDER OR RACE OF THE NEXT PRESIDENT IS OF LITTLE IMPORTANCE, BUT MAY HAVE MILD INFLUENCE IN SPECIFIC COUNTRIES/CONTINENTS.
- What do you think of the role Bill Clinton is playing in Hillary Clinton's campaign? I THINK BILL IS PLAYING WITH FIRE. ON THE ONE HAND HE IS, IN FACT, THE SPOUSE. ON THE OTHER HE IS A FORMER PRESIDENT AND MAY DO GRAVE HARM TO HIS WIFE'S ABILITY TO PORTRAY HERSELF AS "PRESIDENTIAL".
- Are you planning on staying up to follow the Super Tuesday primaries? NO. I WILL SEE THE RESULTS THE NEXT MORNING, WHICH IN FACT IS JUST A FEW HOURS AFTER THE VOTES ARE COUNTED
- Which candidate, if elected president, would make you most proud to be an American and why? HILLARY WOULD. SHE IS THE MOST SEASONED AND GIFTED OF THE CANDIDATES, AND WOULD OF COURSE BE THE FIRST US WOMAN PRESIDENT
- Which is more important to you in a president: ability to pass legislation or ability to inspire the country?
- Which aspect of the presidential campaign do you find hardest to explain to Europeans?

I am from the great State of Arizona ( home of John Mc Cain), and I will be voting for Barack Obama. Although I respect McCain, this country needs a democrat in and the old ways out...Us Americans REALLY do want this war to be over!!!!!! we can not push our agenda on everyone like our administration would like to do. I like Hillary too but the Republicans do not, and are afraid of her and
I think the world would like to see a man with his character run this great nation.
The Superbowl is in town this weekend and this is a beautiful city for this... All of you come to Arizona in the winter.. and check out this great state

- Do you feel that it's important to vote?
Always.
- Do you feel that the new Democrats Abroad global primary is important to you and to the election in general?
Yes.
- Are you a member of a political party?
Yes. Democrats.
- Do you participate in American civic life while abroad (e.g. cyberactivism, op-ed letters, overseas party activism, other)?
No.
- Given the fierce competition for votes due to small victory margins in recent elections, do you feel that the candidates are paying more attention to the votes of overseas Americans?
I certainly hope so. I hate to think of any votes being wasted or going uncounted.
- Are you more interested in the election than you would be if you were in the US or less interested?
I have always been interested in the elections.
- Do you think you would vote differently if you lived in the US and if so, why?
No. Perhaps my vote is a bit “tainted” because of how I view the world and the U.S. since living overseas but I do believe my vote would remain the same.
- Would you say that interest in this year's election is higher than usual abroad? If so, why?
Yes because the world’s view of Americans has plummeted to an all-time low thanks to Bush so whoever wins the office will need to do some a major salvage operation.
- What is the most important issue to you in the upcoming election?
Too many to mention – domestically: universal health care; international: public relations
- Where do you get the most useful and persuasive information about the election (TV, newspapers, Internet...)?
Internet

- I live in Spain but run my own consultancy business. How should I best set up my business bearing in mind that most of my clients are based overseas? Dear Mr Collins, you basically have two options - through a limited company (SL) or as a freelance professional. However it's a difficult area to generalise about and the tax implications of the two vehicles are completely different. I suggest you check out our website www.spainaccounting.com for more details and contact me with your specific doubts and queries. Finally I always advise that it's best to meet so that we can explore all the issues face to face. regards David Cook Spain Accounting Asked by : peter collins Answered by : Tax Expert David Cook
