Expatica blogger Kristen Bernardi recommends top three ice cream parlours in Madrid. The last lazy days of summer are upon us. Here are some of the best ice cream parlours the capital has to offer.
Giuseppe Ricci
This Italian-owned parlour has prime real estate for enjoying a cone while taking a stroll down Huertas. Fresh fruit flavours such as melon and strawberry are the ultimate refreshing treat, while rich favourites such as chocolate hazelnut and chunky pistachio lull you into a sweet coma.
Giuseppe Ricci is one of the few places in Madrid to offer soy ice cream, and despite its exquisite imported ingredients and wide variety, is one of the best values around. You’d pay more for a Magnum on a stick.
Location: Huertas, 9 (Metro: Sol / Antón Martín)
Tel: 91 429 33 45
Giangrossi
From the outside, this dessert haven looks more like a posh after-hours club with its floor-to-ceiling white curtains and leather banquettes.
You’ll be much happier, though, if you leave your dancing shoes at home and put on some loose-fitting trousers.
Giangrossi’s homemade dulce de leche is a creamy, decadent treat – one scoop is plenty and your eyes will roll to the back of your head at one bits.
Also frighteningly tasty: mascarpone with fruits of the forest and the exotic, inventive sorbets, such as tart lemon-lime with ginger and mandarin-carrot.
The best part? They deliver! Get a litre brought straight to your door to beat the queues – and the heat.
Location: Alberto Aguilera, 1 (Metro: San Bernardo)
Location: Cava Baja, 40 (Metro: La Latina)
Tel: 902 444 130
See www.giangrossi.es for a full menu, more locations and delivery information.
Helados Sienna
These heladerías are some of the oldest in Madrid, and once again the Italians get the credit for churning out the creamy, made-on-site gelato.
The unique sambayón is made with sweet port wine, while more traditional flavours like strawberry gets a light touch with queso filadelfia.
The horchata is also homemade, and the granizados come four refreshing flavours. You can take away a litre of the cold stuff for just EUR 12, but both locations listed below are park-adjacent, so I recommend that you pull up a patch of grass and dig in, while the sun’s still shining.
Location: Sancho Davila, 29 (Metro: O’Donnell)
Tel: 913 555 544
Location: Narváez, 63 (Metro: Retiro / Ibiza)
