Moving to Madrid and not sure where to live? Read this simplified guide by Kids In Madrid to learn more about the charming city dwellings.
Originally the Jewish quarter of Madrid, Lavapiés is probably the most multicultural barrio of Madrid which is heavily influenced by African, Arabic and gypsy cultures. The plaza of Lavapiés marks the centre of this barrio. If you walk to the south you will find more interesting places, street artists and vendors.

Also worth considering is the quiet, small, mature colony of terraced houses called Tercio y Terol. Ideal for young families as each home has a patio and it is right next to San Isidro Park. Sited across the river from the Athletico stadium it is within easy access of the centre. There is ample parking. The aging inhabitants are gradually being replaced by younger folk and there seems to be inceasing numbers of people involved in TV or the theatre. Well worth considering.
I find the comment that a gay district isn't suitable for 'families' extremely short sighted. What about same sex couples with children. Are they not families as well? And what exactly are you implying by saying a gay district isn't suitable for people of all ages? What exactly are gay people 'up to' that children should not be exposed to?
Lavapies is the most dangerous part of madrid, I wouldn't recommend living there unless you want to get robbed.
