19/01/2010Jogging in Barcelona

Jogging in Barcelona Explorer Publishing's guide to where you can jog and enjoy breathtaking views of the city.

Barcelona’s warm Mediterranean climate leaves the avid sportsman or amateur enthusiast utterly spoilt for choice. With hot summers and mild sunny winters, bad weather is rarely a viable reason to avoid exercising.

Barcelona is full of idyllic places to go for a jog. First and foremost, there are the main parks such as  Ciutadella, Montjuïc and Parc Güell. The latter is the most challenging to run, due to the steep uphill slog, but the view from the top makes for an exhilarating reward. The many jogging tracks in Montjuïc are pleasant, and you can enjoy clean air and magnificent views. The beachfront promenade is a hot spot for tanned, toned and lithe individuals running to the pace of their iPods. From Barceloneta to Bogatell, there is a long enough stretch to test your endurance.

The Club Natació Montjuic (www.cnmontjuic.com) has a running circuit through the grounds of Montjuic, again with stunning views. The best place to find information on athletics training and running tracks is through the governing body of the sport: Catalan Athletics Federation (www.atletisme.com/fca).

Officially, hashing is a more energetic form of the traditional British paper chase during which participants run after a ‘hare’ (the person nominated to run ahead, leaving clues en route).

Unofficially, hashing is an excuse to give each other crude names and drink large quantities of post-run beer.  Barcelona Hash House Harriers does all of the above on the last weekend of each month; no-name adult harriers pay EUR 5, named harriers EUR 4.

Set in a park, this 1.5km running track is ideal for a quick jog in your lunch break. Those training for competitions or as part of a fitness regime prefer to do the course several times over. This is recommended for people who prefer running in a park to the treadmill any day.

Founded in 1979, this Poble Sec running club works in conjunction with the Coordinadora d’Entitats de Poble Sec (Poble Sec community centre), an organisation that hosts multi-cultural initiatives.

The Club Atlètic Running has a blogspot where regular feeds are entered on recent runs and competitions. It is a sociable club for serious runners who enjoy pushing themselves to the limit on 10km mountain runs, coastal excursions and 42km marathons. Port Olímpic is a popular meeting point for training sessions all year round.

Contact the club directly between the hours of 16:00 and 22:00 to find out about upcoming runs and training sessions.

Used for training and warm-up sessions during the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, many world-class athletes have left their mark on this 400m athletics track. The only other facilities are a small gym, shower and snack kiosk. Set in beautiful grounds and high up on Montjuic, the air is clear and pleasant.

The one-off entrance fee is EUR 4.54. Season tickets of 10 admissions cost EUR 35 but if you plan to train on a regular basis it may be worth subscribing to yearly membership of EUR 184.66. There are regular training sessions and personal trainers are on hand.
