Animal magic: A Royal blessing She’s the royal equivalent of Dr. Dolittle. Meet Princess Xandra and a few of her animals. Cary Johnston reports.

In her stunning home in the hills overlooking Marbella, Princess Xandra von Hohenlohe is happy and content, as are her numerous pets. Many were rescued from a life of cruelty or abandonment – an unfortunate byproduct of urban living anywhere.

"A sanctuary was badly needed here in Marbella because you saw so many stray dogs in the roads and the situation was becoming impossible," explains the Princess, an aristocrat whose down to earth nature is combined with a blood connection to the Spanish royal family.

As a result Amigos de Animales Abandonados, an animal sanctuary, was launched in 1992. As the president, Hohenlohe and her centre has helped more than 30,000 animals, mostly dogs and cats. Occasionally though, a more unusual creature comes her way.

"We had a dolphin once, which had been injured in the sea and was ill. He was put in a plastic swimming pool. We tried to treat him along with experts from the Málaga sanctuary for sea mammals, but unfortunately he died."

Many stories have happy endings though, as all animals found are given treatments, vaccinations or operations ifs required, and most animals are then re-housed. To continue the good work, Hohenlohe raises funds at a huge charity gala event in Marbella.

"I think our attitude to animals, especially in schools, is changing. And there are some laws coming which can help us too," says Hohenlohe. She may be a Princess, but she's not afraid to get her hands dirty.

"I'm studying to become a vet," she reveals. "Animals are my life..."
