What Mediterranean diet? Half Spaniards are fat 03/05/2007 00:00

3 May 2007

MADRID – More than half of Spaniards are officially overweight, according to a new health survey published on Thursday.

The National Health Survey for 2006 found 52 percent were piling on too many kilos

The incidence of those who had a body mass index of over 30, rose from 13.32 percent to 15.25 percent of the population.

For the first time since records of their waistlines began to be collected, Spaniards are now officially overweight.

A previous survey in 2003 found only 49 percent were obese.

But the bad news about the nation’s shape does come as record numbers of people are joining gyms, perhaps to shift some of that extra blubber.

Sixty percent said they did some form of physical activity in their spare time, compared with 45 percent three years ago.
