Unemployment drops for fourth month running 02/06/2006 00:00

MADRID – Unemployment in Spain fell for the fourth consecutive month in May, according to figures released on Friday.

The Department of Labour said 71,148 fewer people were out of work in May, 3.4 percent less than the previous month – the second highest fall in a month of May after last May.

That leaves 2,004,528 individuals looking for work.

A total of 1,637,566 contracts were signed last month – the highest ever figure recorded in May of any year since figures have been kept and the second highest ever.

Of all the new contracts signed, 10.1 percent of the total were indefinite contracts, some 166,868.

Male unemployment fell further than the rate among women – 4.7 percent, compared to 2.6 percent.
