Twenty migrants drown, 11 rescued as boat sinks 05/10/2006 00:00

GRAN CANARIAS — Twenty immigrants were drowned on Thursday and eleven saved when their inflatable boat sank off the Canary Islands.
Four of those saved by a passing merchant ship were adults and the rest were children.
Survivors said the launch split in two leaving some in the prow and others in the stern as they drifted 120 nautical miles south of Gran Canaria.
Police said a Belgian ship rescued the would-be migrants, who were taken to the port of Leon y Castillo in Las Palmas.
The immigrants had spent five days at sea before the accident happened.
They were lightly burned and bruised.
