MADRID — Police arrested five suspected Islamic terrorists on Wednesday who allegedly helped two of the Madrid bombers escape.
They allegedly helped Mohamed Belhadj and Mohamed Afalah to flee after the Madrid bombing in March 2004, which killed 191 people and injured over 1,700.
They are also said to have had contacts with another terrorist who was involved in the massacre, Daoud Ouhnane, who was later arrested.
Interior ministry sources named the suspects as Zohaib Khadiri, Djilali Boussiri, Nasreddine Ben Laid Amri, Samir Tahtah and Kamal Ahbar.
Khadiri, Boussiri and Ben Laid Amri were detained in Santa Coloma de Gramanet, near Barcelona, Reus, near Tarragona and Vidreres near Girona.
Tahtah was arrested in prison in Puerto de Santa María in Cádiz and lastly Ahbar was also detained in a penal centre in Teixeiro in La Coruna, where they were being held for separate matters.
In the raids carried out on Wednesday, police seized false documentation, cash and records of telephone calls made to Afghanistan and computers.
