Socialist candidate held for murder of unpopular mayor 02/02/2007 00:00

HUESCA — Police arrested on Friday the socialist mayorial candidate for the brutal murder of the the mayor of a tiny village.

All 30 inhabitants of Fago were suspects in the killing of Miguel Grima, 50, whose body was found riddled with gun shot wounds on 12 January.

Police arrested Santaigo Mainar, a socialist candidate and forest ranger, who lived in the village.

Grima was shot dead by waiting gunmen and dumped at the bottom of a steep bank.

The unpopular mayor had been threatened before.

The Popular Party mayor of Fago, a small town of only 30 inhabitants in Huesca, in northern Spain, had previously claimed he had had his brakes tampered with and the orchard in his orchard had been poisoned.

Police would not confirm these claims.

Party allies of the murdered mayor said he could have been murdered by enemies who included local hunters or those who had fallen out with him over property deals.
