MADRID – A Brazilian man confessed in court on Monday to raping 17 women in Madrid in some of the most violent sex attacks in Spain's history.

The attacker, known as 'the Pozuelo rapist' carried out the crimes between August 2000 and July 2003 and was following two girls when he was arrested.

Named in court as Juvenilson D, the rapist accepted the more than 300 years' prison which the prosecution is asking for and told the court he would seek help in prison to "improve as a person".

He also accepted the compensation claims of EUR 411,687 for the damage he caused to the victims.

The rapist had threatened his victims with long knives or flick knives and robbed eight of them of money and their mobile phones. It has been reported that he also used the phones to send messages describing his attacks to the women's family and friends.

The Brazilian, who worked as a decorator and lived in Madrid, carried out 12 of his attacks near the Madrid square Conde de Casal, another three in the area Carabanchel in Madrid and four in the suburb Pozuelo de Alarcon where he was finally arrested.
