Revolt over smoking law ignites fresh row 02/11/2006 00:00

2 November 2006

MADRID — A fresh battle was sparked by Madrid city council's apparent disregard for Spain's anti-smoking law.

The council may permit smoking in bars and cafes inside the workplace, at private parties and at civic functions.

The move would break the law which came into action across Spain at the start of 2006.

The health ministry is to appeal against the move.

Elena Salgado, health minister, said her department would oppose any move to change the state law.

The current law bans smoking at work in any area.

Company bars or cafes which are over 100 square metres must provide non-smoking areas. In smaller bars it is not allowed to smoke.

The health ministry has already appealed against similar moves by regional governments in Valencia and Castilla y Leon and La Rioja for failing to abide by the law.

Five regions have complied with the law.
