Police to breathalyse 15,000 drivers a day 05/06/2006 00:00

5 June 2006

MADRID – The Civil Guard is to run an intensive drink-drive campaign over the next fortnight, breathalysing 15,000 drivers a day throughout Spain.

The General Management of Traffic, the DGT, said the campaign was aimed at reducing the number of drink drivers on the roads, believed to be responsible for up to a third of accidents.

The traffic section of the Guardia Civil intends to create more than 800 check points on the roads, carrying out a total of 200,000 breath tests by 18 June.

The DGT will also be taking out adverts in newspapers and on TV and radio, with the message "Al volante, ni una sola gota de alcohol" – "At the wheel, not a single drop of alcohol."
