Only Winter Olympics gold medal winner dies 06/11/2006 00:00

MADRID — Spain's only Winter Olympics gold-medal winner, slalom skier Francisco Fernandez Ochoa, died from cancer.
Health care sources said on Monday Fernandez Ochoa, who won his gold at the Sapporo Games in Japan in 1972, passed away late Sunday at his home after a battle with lymphatic cancer. He was 56.
The oncology clinic where he had been receiving treatment in recent weeks confirmed his death.
Fernandez Ochoa, who took a slalom bronze in the 1974 world championships, was a member of a prominent skiing family.
His sister Blanca won a bronze medal in the Albertville, Canada Winter Olympics of 1992.
Only 10 days ago in his hometown of Cercedilla, Fernandez Ochoa was honored along with other sporting heroes.
In what proved to be the last public appearance of the champion know affectionately as "Paquito," Princesses Elena and Cristina unveiled a statue recalling the moment he received his Olympic gold.
