New driving licence may cut Easter death toll 04/04/2007 00:00

MADRID – Thousands of motorists began the second biggest getaway of the Easter period on Wednesday as police mounted a huge operation to stop more deaths on the road.
Since last Friday, 43 people have been killed – more than at this point during the Easter holiday last year.
But this is the first year in which a points-based licence has been in operation and authorities hope this will stop more fatalities.
The biggest traffic delays are expected on Mediterranean routes, though it is not a public holiday in the Canary Islands, Catalonia and Valencia until Good Friday.
Driving authorities have started extra lanes in some of the busiest roads, with extra radar to cut speeding drivers.
Last year, 101 drivers died on the roads over the Easter Week.
