MADRID — Fatal road crashes have fallen by 20 percent since a points-based driving licence was brought in in July, authorities said on Monday.
The number of people killed in car crashes in July and August was 528, compared with 667 who died in the same period the year before.
During the past weekend, 37 people died in road accidents as millions of Spaniards returned from holiday - ten less than the year before.
Pere Navarro, the director general of the Spanish Traffic Authorities, put the decrease in the death rate down to the new licence.
It was brought in to try to cut the high number of deaths on the roads in Spain.
It has brought the number of fatal crashes down in other countries where it has been introduced, like France, Britain and Italy.
