Mother of Madrid ‘bomber’: my son is no terrorist 03/05/2007 00:00

MADRID – The mother of one of the alleged ringleaders of the Madrid train bombings told a court on Thursday he was at home during the attacks.

In an emotional testimony to the court, the mother of Jamal Zougam insisted he was in her home until 10am on the mornings of the bombings in March 2004.

She said she was upset about all the things which had been said about her son.

“They have said lots of things about him,” said the mother, who was not named.

She was the first witnesses for the defence in the trial of 29 people accused of playing various roles in the terrorist attacks by Islamic radicals which killed 191 people and left 1,800 injured.

Zougam is accused, among other things, of supplying the mobile phones which set off the bombs.

He is alleged to have been near the trains when the bombs were set off.

But his mother said on the morning of 11 March, he got up at 10am and they watched the television together until 11am.

She told the court Zougam was not part of a “violent Islamic cell”.

As she left the court, she blew a kiss towards her son who is sitting in the bullet-proof ‘fish tank’ for the accused.
