Man arrested after 19 new fires start in Galicia 06/09/2006 00:00

SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA — Two forest fires were still out of control on Wednesday in Galicia after a wave of 19 new blazes hit the region.

Fire fighters were tackling the blazes in Barco de Valdeorras and Carballeda de Valdeorras, in the province of Ourense.

Nineteen fires started across the region on Tuesday.

The worse was in the town of Rois. Others started in Quiroga, in Lugo, Pereiro de Aguiar, in Ourense, As Neves in Pontevedra and in the village of Bocamaos in  Lugo.

Xosé Manuel Penas Patiño, the mayor of Rois, claimed the fires had been started on purpose.

The police arrested one middle-aged man on Tuesday for allegedly starting a blaze in A Zapateira.

Residents had to be evacuated from the village, which is in the region of La Coruña.
