Madrid airport matches Heathrow with two metros 03/05/2007 00:00

3 May 2007

MADRID – A metro station finally links Madrid’s new Terminal 4 to the rest of the city.

After months of delays, the new station will mean travellers arriving at the Richard Rogers’ designed terminal will be able to get into the centre of the capital at the Nuevos Ministerios station in 20 minutes.

Passengers had complained they had to walk about 20 minutes to get to the metro station which serves the other terminals at Barajas.

The new station was inaugurated on Thursday by the president of Madrid’s regional government, Esperanza Aguirre.

She said: “The new station will put Madrid on a par with Heathrow in London – the only other airport in Europe to have two stations at the airport.”

The works started in 2006, but were dogged by political rows

More than 20,000 people use Terminal 4 every day.

But for non-frequent users, like tourists, there will be an additional one euro charge.
