Lights go off in mass climate change protest 01/02/2007 00:00

MADRID — The lights were due to go off across Spain on Thursday as the country joined a Europe-wide protest against global warming.
In an initiative timed to coincide with the publication of a UN report into the role of energy consumption in climate change, the electricity grid will go down to a minimum at 7.55pm for five minutes.
Lights in public buildings in cities across Spain are to go off, from the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia to the Giralda in Seville and the Puerta de Alcala in Madrid and 46 markets in Barcelona.
City councils and regional authorities have agreed to take part in the mass switch off.
The government's secretary general for climate change, Arturo Gonzalo Aizpiri said he was in touch with the national grid to arrange the power should go down without affecting public services.
Similar moves are planned across Europe, with the lights of the Eiffel Tower due to go off for the duration of the protest.
