French police probe link to ETA killing 04/12/2007 00:00

4 December 2007

MADRID - French police are investigating whether an attempted carjacking in southwestern France yesterday by an armed man and woman was carried out by members of the same ETA cell who on Saturday killed a Civil Guard officer in the French town of Capbreton and seriously injured another.

The botched robbery of the car occurred at 1.30pm in the town of Gabillou, 310 kilometers from Capbreton and 140 from Bordeaux, close to where police lost the trail of the three alleged ETA members involved in Saturday's shooting. The two would-be carjackers fled in another vehicle.

French investigators said the attempted car theft matched ETA's modus operandi and could provide important clues - including fingerprints and DNA evidence - to catch the people responsible for the murder of 24-year-old Civil Guard officer Raúl Centeno. His partner, 23-year-old Fernando Trapero, remained in a coma in hospital in Bayonne, France, yesterday.

Investigators believe the Civil Guards, who were working undercover investigating ETA with French police, met their killers by chance when they stopped for breakfast in a café.
