French paedophile may face trial in Indonesia 15/03/2005 00:00

DENPASAR, Indonesia, March 15 (AFP) - A French paedophile suspect arrested in Bali after an extradition request by France may stand trial on the island for child sex acts allegedly committed in Indonesia, police said Tuesday.

Authorities had earlier planned to immediately deport Michel Heller but an investigation found that he had allegedly sexually assaulted three children on Bali, the island's police spokesman A.S. Reniban said.

Heller was arrested last week at a bungalow in Bunutan village in the east of the island. He is believed to have lived in Indonesia for five years after fleeing child sex charges in the southwestern French town of Grasse, near Nice.

"On the instructions of Bali's chief of police, the suspect will have to first undergo the legal process here before he is sent back to France," Reniban said, adding that this could include a trial.

Bali and several other Indonesian islands, including neighbouring Lombok, have reputations as havens for foreign paedophiles and child sex networks.

A former Australian diplomat arrested for suspected paedophilia last year, hanged himself in his cell in May after he was jailed for 13 years on child sex offences.
