Four arrested for aiding Iraqi Islamic militants 07/11/2006 00:00

7 November 2006

MADRID — Spanish police arrested an Egyptian and three Algerians on charges of collaboration with a terrorist organization, authorities said.

The interior ministry said Judge Juan del Olmo ordered the four taken into custody after concluding they had falsified passports, visas and identity documents with the aim of enabling Iraq-based Islamic militants to enter Spain, which would in turn give them ready access to the rest of the European Union.

In the course of the arrests, police confiscated EUR 21,600 in cash, two portable computers and a number of cell phones.

The homes of the suspects were also found to contain forged identity cards, photocopies of passports and Spanish residency permits and items used in falsifying documents, such as solvent, magnifiers and embossers.

Del Olmo is heading the investigation into the bombings of Madrid commuter trains by Muslim extremists.

The attacks left nearly 200 dead and more than 1,500 wounded.
