Felipe urges warmer ties between Spain and US 05/10/2006 00:00

WASHINGTON — Crown prince Felipe on Thursday urged strengthening relations between Madrid and Washington at the beginning of his trip to the United States.
The heir to the Spanish throne will visit the White House as an invited guest of U.S. President George W. Bush to commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month.
Felipe returned as an alumnus to Georgetown University, where he attended the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service for two years in the early 1990s.
At Georgetown, the prince spoke about the need to tighten links between Spain and the United States, saying that strengthening relations among the universities of both countries could contribute decisively to that effort.
Felipe also officially presented a rich bibliographic collection about Spain and its history to the university, a resource that will be housed in the Georgetown library at the disposal of the institution's students and professors.
The prince's tour of the US capital comes as relations between the two countries are warming after three years of frosty encounters following the withdrawal of Spanish troops from Iraq.
