MADRID — An ETA terrorist was jailed on Thursday for 41 years for planning to murder King Juan Carlos.

Javier Pérez Aldunate had planned to kill the monarch during Easter Week in 2004 while King Juan Carlos was relaxing with his family in Palma de Mallorca.

He had also planned to murder a Popular Party deputy and a member of the Civil Guard.

Aldunate was convicted of an offence against the Crown, two offences of conspiracy to murder, being a member of a terrorist organisation, possessing arms, hiding explosives and falsification of documents.

He was convicted after a trial at Madrid's Audiencia Nacional.

Another ETA terrorist, Ieltxu López de Aberasturi, was condemned to six years jail for belonging to a terrorist organisation.

The court heard Aldunate was told by ETA to travel to Mallorca where he should follow the movements of the king.

He was to receive a call telling him how he would get a rifle with which he should shoot the king.

But finally, ETA could not get the rifle to Aldunate and he was told to return to France, where he had been hiding.

He was arrested in February 2005 while in the Basque Country. He had been sent there on the orders of ETA to kill members of the armed forces.

Police found a rifle and large amounts of ammunition and details of potential targets.
