Drought sees water reservoirs fall for 14th week 01/08/2006 00:00

MADRID – The amount of water in reservoirs in Spain has fallen for the fourteenth consecutive week, according to the department for the environment.
Reservoir levels fell by 1.6 percent in the last week to 24,901 cubic hectometres.
The figure is 7,000 less than the average recorded in the last five years and 10,000 below 2002.
A total of 876 cubic hectometres have been lost in the last 14 weeks, leaving the reservoirs only 46.8 percent full, and the levels are predicted to fall further still as Spain's scorching summer continues.
Rain has been scarce, with an average of 3.8 litres per square metre recorded, 7 percentage points less than the historical average recorded between 1930 and 1996.
