Blue tongue causes livestock transport ban 06/11/2007 00:00

6 November 2007

Authorities in the Basque province of Guipúzcoa on Monday put a freeze on the transport of all livestock as a preventive measure after several positive tests for blue tongue disease.

Seven sheep farms and two cattle farms have animals showing signs of this mosquito-borne respiratory illness, which has a 50-percent mortality rate. Authorities are planning a mass vaccination program "as soon as possible."
