At least six are injured as Alicante flat collapses 03/08/2006 00:00

ALICANTE – Six people have been injured and at least one teenager trapped after a block of flats in Alicante collapsed on Thursday lunchtime.
Firefighters say the disaster at 76 Calle de Cerda in the Los Angeles neighbourhood was due to an exploding gas canister.
The explosion destroyed an entire floor of the three-storey flat and damaged buildings adjoining the flat and opposite.
Two people in neighbouring buildings received medical attention at the scene.
Another six injured were taken to Alicante’s Hospital General, including three in what was described as a serious condition.
On Thursday late afternoon, emergency workers were still at work at the scene, checking for other victims and trying to free an adolescent from beneath the rubble.
The trapped teenager was believed to be the person who alerted the emergency services to the collapse of the building, by calling 112 at 1.45pm.
