8 May 2008

MADRID - Students and teachers took to the streets on Wednesday as 80 percent of teachers employed in Madrid's public schools protested against regional education policy.

The strike aims at improving both educational standards and working conditions, and to protest against the creeping privatisation of the school system to create institutions known as concertados.

One teacher bemoaned regional premier Esperanza Aguirre's "selling schools due to their lack of equipment," or having one computer room "for 800 pupils".

A second strike is planned for 21 May.
