MADRID - Three Spanish players seeded in the Australian Open won their first round matches Tuesday in three sets, with one upset marking the day for Spain.

World number five David Ferrer beat France's Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-2, 6-2, 6-1, while number 22 Juan Carlos Ferrero had little difficulty beating Nicolas Kiefer 6-4, 6-3, 6-1. Fernando Verdasco, ranked 25, also beat Thierry Ascione with ease, 6-4 6-0, 6-3. The unseeded Óscar Hernández will also see round two, having edged out Ivo Minar in four sets.

Nicolas Almagro, 27-seed, was upset in three sets by Marin Cilic, while unseeded Santiago Ventura and Alberto Montañés also lost.
