A spokesperson for the royal family was "very surprised" yesterday to hear that several private letters written to Prince Felipe by the king in the 1980s have been published in a new book.

MADRID - A spokesperson for the royal family was "very surprised" yesterday to hear that several private letters written to Prince Felipe by the king in the 1980s have been published in a new book.
The letters were sent to the prince while he was studying in Canada, and contain fatherly advice from the king to his future successor. "You must be seen to be spirited, even if you're tired; you must be kind, even if you don't feel like it; attentive, even if you're not interested; obliging, even if it's hard for you...," one letter reads.
The spokesperson confirmed the authenticity of the letters, but said that they had been published without the permission of either the king or the prince. El Príncipe y el Rey (The Prince and the King), by the journalist José García Abad, went on sale yesterday.
