'Belle epoque' screenwriter Rafael Azcona passes away at 81

MADRID - The screenwriter who penned many of Spanish cinema's most memorable scripts over the past 50 years, Rafael Azcona, died on Monday aged 81 after a long battle with lung cancer.
Born in Logroño in 1926, Azcona began a career as a novelist and comedy writer before his script for Plácido was picked up by the director Luis García Berlanga in 1961. Later, the writer's work was interpreted by filmmakers such as Carlos Saura, Fernando Trueba, and José Luis García Sánchez. Best known in recent times for the 1994 Oscar-winning Belle epoque, Azcona also penned classics such as the Berlanga-directed El verdugo (The Executioner) and the hilarious El Cochecito, directed by Italy's Marco Ferreri.
Director José Luis Cuerda said "he wrote the best stories in Spanish cinema," adding: "He was also a marvellous human being."
