Labour ministry officials, business and union leaders met on Wednesday to discuss about measures to sustain the labour market.

MADRID - On the backdrop of rapidly rising unemployment and slowing economic growth, labour ministry officials met Wednesday with business and union leaders to set the ball rolling on negotiations aimed at cushioning the blow to Spanish workers from the current economic turmoil.

The meeting of Labour and Immigration Minister Celestino Corbacho with representatives of the CEOE business federation and the UGT and CCOO unions less than a month into the new legislature reflects the priority the Socialist government is placing on measures to buoy the labour market.

Among other initiatives due to be discussed over the coming months are plans to change the way public unemployment offices handle jobseekers cases with the aim of providing more personalised attention to get the recently unemployed back to work faster.
