Hospital under fire over bacteria deaths 13/05/2008 00:00

Doctors claim that 18 people have died after being infected with a drug-resistant strain of the Acinetobacter baumannii bacteria.

13 May 2008

MADRID - A patients' association on Monday slammed Madrid's 12 de Octubre Hospital for suggesting that people should accept the risk of bacterial infections when undergoing treatment.

"It is unacceptable," Carmen Flores, a spokeswoman for the Patients' Ombudsman Association, said.

Her comments follow claims by doctors that 18 people have died at the hospital over the last two years as a result of becoming infected with a drug-resistant strain of the Acinetobacter baumannii bacteria - something hospital directors have denied.

Acinetobacter baumannii has also been described as a contributing factor to a further 83 deaths at the hospital.

Spanish prosecutors are currently probing whether the deaths could have been prevented.
