30 January 2008

MADRID - Levante defender Alvaro is about to sign for English Premier League side Newcastle United, the Marca sports daily said on its website on Wednesday.

Marca said that the Brazilian defender will fly into Newcastle for medical checks on Wednesday, and that the Spanish club Levante will be paid around EUR 2 million for him.

Alvaro started out in Spain with Las Palmas in 2000, then signed in 2003 for Zaragoza, where he played for three seasons before joining Levante in 2006.

Levante are rock bottom in La Liga with just 12 points from 21 games, eight points adrift of second-from-bottom side Deportivo Coruna.

Alvaro is the latest player to abandon the sinking Levante ship in the January transfer "window", after Savio, Christian Rigano, Marco Storari, Bruno Cirillo and Emilio Viqueira.
