MADRID - He may have left championship-leading team McLaren and returned to struggling Renault, but Spanish former Formula 1 champion Fernando Alonso is currently the best-paid man on the grid.

Excluding sponsorship deals, Alonso is paid EUR 14.5 million a year at Renault, closely followed by current world champion Kimi Raikkonen, who earns EUR 14 million at Ferrari.

Briton Lewis Hamilton, who finished second in the championship last year ahead of Alonso, who came third, is earning just over EUR 3 million for his efforts.

One of the worst-paid drivers is Alonso's teammate, Nelson Piquet, who is getting less than EUR 1 million in his rookie year at Renault.
