MADRID - The National Police yesterday detained 31 municipal policemen who are suspected of having extorted businesses and commercial establishments in Coslada, a northeast Madrid suburb located in the municipality of Alcalá de Henares.

Police sources said that a Coslada City Hall official could be detained for questioning in the case.

The 31 policemen are being held incommunicado for 72 hours at different police stations in Madrid to determine whether charges will be brought against them.

The federation of businesses and commercial establishments of Alacalá de Henares (FECOHE) encouraged business owners to speak out "without fear" if they have been a target of police extortion.
