Frankfurt am Main | 14/05/2009 - 26/07/2009 Caravaggio in the Netherlands: music and genre in the work of Caravaggio and the Utrecht Caravaggists

Exhibition presenting works by the Italian artist Caravaggio (1571-1610) together with music and works by the so-called Utrecht Caravaggists, who enthusiastically adopted the new pictorial language developed by their idol, varied it and developed it further. On show are works by amongst others Dirck van Baburen, Gerard van Honthorst and Hendrick Terbrugghen. Some forty masterworks, including Caravaggio’s famous ‘Lute Player’, provide insight into the Utrecht painters’ intensive exploration of the art of Caravaggio and his Italian contemporaries.
