The 29 documents date from 1941 to 1942 and include plans drawn with cool technical precision of a gas chamber and a crematorium.

Berlin -- Original plans for the Nazi extermination camp at Auschwitz discovered in a Berlin apartment last November went on public display in Germany on Tuesday for the first time.

The 29 documents, acquired by the Bild newspaper and put on show by its publisher Axel Springer in Berlin, date from 1941 to 1942 and include plans drawn with cool technical precision of a gas chamber and a crematorium, Bild said.

Auschwitz survivor Wladyslaw Bartoszewski officially opened the exhibition on Monday evening. Bartoszewski is now responsible for Poland's complex and often difficult ties with neighbor and EU partner Germany.

"The Auschwitz plans shake the soul of every thinking and feeling individual because they are the expression of an inhumanity created by people,” Bild cited Bartoszewski as saying. “These are the construction plans for real hell."

More than one million Jews, gypsies, gays and others deemed "subhumans" by the Nazis were killed at Auschwitz, near the Polish city of Krakow, out of a total six million slaughtered up to the fall of the regime in 1945.

The exhibition runs until February 28.
