William Forsythe, the ground-breaking US choreographer, is stepping down from the contemporary dance company he set up in Frankfurt, the city authorities announced on Friday.
At the same time, the Forsythe Company has secured funding from the cities of Frankfurt and Dresden until 2018, the authorities said in a statement.
"The partners of the Forsythe Company want to continue the public-private cooperation agreement between the states of Hesse and Saxony and the cities of Frankfurt and Dresden until 2018," the statement said.
The extension of the contract coincides with a change in artistic direction of the troupe.
"Dancer and choreographer Jacopo Godani will take over the artistic direction of the company from September 2015, taking over from William Forsythe who is pulling out of the active role as chief choreographer, but will stay on as artistic advisor," the statement said.
Godani was one of the key soloists of Forsythe's company, then known as Ballett Frankfurt, between 1991 and 2000 and worked one many of the group's choreographies.
As a choreographer himself he has worked at top international companies such as the Compania Nacional de Danca in Madrid, Corpo di Ballo del Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Royal Danish Ballet in Copenhagen, the Royal Ballet Covent Garden in London and the Semperoper Ballet in Dresden.
