MAINZ - Germany's second public TV broadcasting network ZDF announced plans on Friday to produce a documentary-drama on the life of the late Pope John Paul II.

The Mainz-based network said the moving life of the "millennium pope" will be portrayed in a combination of documentary film material and dramatised scenes covering the late pontiff's life from his boyhood onwards.

German author and filmmaker Gero von Boehm will write and produce the docu-drama, with shooting to begin this summer and to be completed by the summer of 2006.

The production will be shot on location in Poland and in Rome, and will include on-screen comments by prominent political personalities, among them Lech Walesa, Mikhail Gorbachev, Bill Clinton and Helmut Kohl, ZDF said.
